Chapter Twelve

"Hey, Garrett," I chirped, sounding brighter than I felt. I got home around one am, climbed into bed beside a sleeping Solomon and arose at eight, after he'd gone. Now it was mid morning, I had a strong black coffee in front of me on my desk and a half eaten cherry muffin.

"Hi, sis," said Garrett, sounding as distracted as usual. "I'm taking Traci away for the weekend without the kids. There's the choice between New York with a Broadway show and galleries and fancy stuff. Or a bed and breakfast place called the Blackberry Inn in some sleepy little town in the middle of nowhere called Calendar. That involves antiquing, country walks, and romantic dining. Or I could take her to Lake Pierce and get a cabin. What do you think?"

"You can go to Lake Pierce any time. You've been to New York a bunch of times so I say go for the romantic bed and breakfast."

"Good choice. It looks pretty. She will love it."

"She will love being with you." My brother and his wife were among the happiest married people I'd ever known and given that they’d been together forever, and produced three children, that was high praise indeed.

"What can I do for you? I'm sure you didn't call to help me book a break for my wife."

"I need a couple of background checks," I said.

"Go on?"

"Bryce Maynard. His online presence is easy to find but I'm interested in knowing if he's had any convictions, even minor ones."

"That I can do. Stay on the line."

"You're being remarkably helpful." I was instantly suspicious.

"I think I used up all my favors with you," admitted Garrett. "I need to stockpile some more."

"No babysitting before the wedding," I replied.

"Agreed. What's this guy's birthdate?"

I ran my finger across the paperwork Jas supplied and gave it to him.

"Yeah, he's in the system. Couple o’ minor things. He was arrested for drunk conduct. Not a DUI, more like disturbing the peace a couple years back, and there was a driving violation five years ago. Let me see... Yeah, here it is. He got pulled over for a busted taillight and he gave the officer so much mouth that the officer arrested him."

"Really?" I scribbled my notes and waited for Garrett to confirm the dates.

"Yeah. Wait; there's one more. He punched a guy in a parking lot in spring of last year. A cop happened to be driving past at the same time."

"Was there a reason?"

"According to the report, the victim looked at your guy's girlfriend the wrong way. There's no record of it ever going to court. Looks like he paid his fines on everything and kept his nose clean since then."

"Thanks for checking."

"Anything else I can do for you?"

"Have you heard anything about a tank turning up?"

"A tank?" Garrett paused. "Not a word. Should I be worried?"

I had no idea how to answer that so I went with, "Nope."

"Good to know. I'll see you at dinner at Mom and Dad's tonight?"

"I'll be there." I hung up and looked over my notes.
